Marvin Mims (Broncos) Draft Preview
Post-Draft Fantasy Impact
Draft Team: Denver Broncos, Round 2, 32nd pick (63rd overall)
Marvin Mims was both a surprising and notable second-round pick for the Denver Broncos. Surprising as the team has a crowded wide receiver room with Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, and KJ Hamler. Notable because this was the first selection of their 2023 draft, showing how important they believe Mims could be to their future. With Sean Payton trying to recreate the Broncos in his image, Mims was the first player he picked to begin the reshuffling.
Denver represents an intriguing landing spot with a ton of unknowns but definite upside. From a current roster construction standpoint, it’s a crowded wide receiver room in 2023, but one that could yield a ton of playing time after this year. There has been significant buzz on potential trades for Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton, and the Broncos have outs after this year for Sutton and Patrick if they want to move on. So while Mims doesn’t look like he will see a ton of playing time in 2023, those who are patient with him could reap huge benefits in 2024.
Russel Wilson is an enigma after last season’s dumpster fire. But I refuse to believe that a perennial Pro Bowl and top 5 fantasy QB simply lost his ability to play football. I think it’s much more likely that Nathaniel Hackett was a generationally bad coach. Sean Payton can fix the potential locker room issues and knows how to run an effective NFL offense.
The variables around a crowded depth chart and the jury being out on his quarterback to make Mims a risky asset and likely a 2023 afterthought, but those who can stash him for a year could find Mims a great value in the third round. If you think Wilson can bounce back and believe in Sean Payton, you should believe in the value of Marvin Mims.
Marvin Mims Draft Preview
What Marvin Mims lacks in polish, he makes up for in eye-popping plays. Establishing himself as a true college #1 wide receiver in 2022, his ability to break games open (avg. 19.5 ypc in college) at key moments made him one of Oklahoma’s most important players over his career. His average size and strength may limit some upside at the next level, but his impressive tape should make him an early-round pick in the 2023 draft.
Measurables
- 5’11” 183 lbs
- 40-yard dash – 4.38 seconds
- Vertical Jump – 39.5″
- Broad Jump – 10’9″
Stats at Oklahoma
- 2022: 54 catches, 1083 yards, 6 TDs
- 2021: 32 catches, 705 yards, 5 TDs
- 2020: 37 catches, 610 yards, 9 TDs
Strengths
Works effectively inside and out, lined up all over the field for Oklahoma. Long speed is excellent, lending itself to big chunk plays over the top. Tracks deep balls well and shows good promise in contested catch down the field. Excellent in the open field after the catch, a trait that shows up in his plus punt returning.
Weaknesses
Size could potentially limit to slot although I still think he can be effective on the outside in the NFL. Smaller catch radius than you would like. Doesn’t run the whole route tree and was schemed open in a ton in college.
Grade: A-
Marvin Mims is a rock solid pro prospect with everything you want in a wide receiver, good hands, great speed, and big play ability. He does have some developing to do and may be limited to the slot, but if he sees targets at the next level, expect him to produce. He’s a high floor draft choice for dynasty.
