Darnell Washington (Steelers) NFL Draft Preview
Post-Draft Fantasy Impact
The Pittsburgh Steelers added some firepower to their tight end position by drafting Darnell Washington in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He may not be the most exciting option in his rookie season, however, with Pat Freiermuth already established as a top 10 tight end in the league.
Washington’s impact on fantasy football will depend heavily on his role in the Steelers’ offense. While Freiermuth may be the primary receiving option at tight end, Washington’s size and ability to catch contested passes could make him a valuable target in the red zone. He could also be used in two-tight end sets or as a blocker, which could limit his fantasy potential. I’m only projecting 11 catches for 149 yards in his rookie season, which makes him a non-factor in redraft leagues.
However, dynasty league owners should take note of Washington’s potential as a breakout star in the future. Although it’s not worth spending too much draft capital on him, Washington is worth stashing on your roster because of his potential as a red zone magnet. With his size and ability to create mismatches with his athleticism, he could become a valuable asset in the Steelers’ offense.
Darnell Washington NFL Draft Preview
Darnell Washington is regarded as one of the top tight ends entering the 2023 draft even though his college receiving numbers were nothing spectacular. What sets Washington apart is his physically imposing size and athleticism. He’s an elite blocker who received a top-ten blocking grade at his position from Pro Football Focus.
Washington was used sparingly, but effectively, in the passing game. He averaged 17.2 yards per catch during his time as a Bulldog, including 7.5 yards after the catch. His height and catch radius make him an excellent red zone target.
He was a semi-finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, and a two-time National Champion at Georgia.

Positives
Washington is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses due to his size, length, and athleticism. He has the speed to get downfield quickly and the size and jumping ability to win jump balls. He has great body control and can adjust to poorly thrown passes, making him an excellent red-zone threat. He has the ability to make plays after the catch due to his size and strength, often dragging defenders for extra yardage.
Washington is an outstanding blocker, both in the run game and in pass protection. He has excellent technique and uses his size and strength to dominate defenders at the point of attack. He has quick feet and good agility, which allows him to get into position quickly and sustain blocks.
Washington is a rare athlete for his size. He has excellent speed for his and can run away from defenders in the open field. He has a quick first step and can get up to speed quickly. He is also a strong and explosive athlete who can make defenders miss in the open field.

Negatives
Washington can be a bit stiff in and out of his breaks, which can make it easier for defenders to stay with him in coverage. He will need to work on his route-running technique to become a more polished receiver.
While Washington is a powerful blocker, he can sometimes rely too much on his size and strength and neglect proper blocking technique. He will need to work on his footwork, hand placement, and leverage to become a more well-rounded blocker.
He may not be as quick as some of the smaller, more nimble defenders he will face in the NFL. He may need to work on his agility and quickness to become a more effective route runner and after-the-catch threat.
Grade – B+
Washington has the size, athleticism, and blocking ability to make an immediate impact in the NFL and the potential to be a dominant tight end. He is a matchup nightmare in the passing game and a dominant force in the run game. Though he may not be a starter for your fantasy team, he will be a constant red zone threat to score.
