Jaren Hall (Vikings) NFL Draft Preview

Post-Draft Fantasy Impact

The Minnesota Vikings selected Jaren Hall in the fifth round. He is expected to be the third-string quarterback. With Kirk Cousins and Nick Mullens both ahead of him on the depth chart, it’s unlikely that he will see any significant playing time in 2023.

While Hall may not have an immediate impact on the Vikings’ fantasy football prospects, he is certainly worth keeping an eye on for those who play in dynasty leagues. Cousins’ contract is set to expire at the end of this year, and if he doesn’t re-sign with the Vikings, Hall could have a shot at the starting job in 2024. This makes him worth a flier for dynasty owners who are looking for a long-term investment at the quarterback position.

Jaren Hall NFL Draft Preview

Jaren Hall finished his fantastic career at BYU with 6,174 passing yards and 52 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions. He added another 798 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Hall was the Pro Football Network Independent Quarterback of the Year in 2021 and the College Football Network Independent Offensive Player and Quarterback of the Year in 2022.

Hall is a dynamic, duo-threat quarterback with all the tools to be successful. However, his size and history of injuries make it likely that he will begin his career as a backup. Hall is projected to be a 4th or 5th-round pick.

Measurables

  • 6’0” 207 lbs
  • Arm Length 29.75”
  • Hand Size 9.5”

 Positives

Jaren Hall is an exceptional athlete with a great blend of speed and agility. He has the ability to extend plays with his legs and escape pressure in the pocket, allowing him to make throws downfield on the run.

He possesses good arm strength and can make all the throws required of a quarterback. He can zip the ball into tight windows with velocity and has the ability to throw deep down the field with accuracy.

Hall has shown impressive accuracy in his throws, especially on intermediate and deep routes. He can hit receivers in stride and put the ball where only they can make the catch. He has a good understanding of the offense and can read defenses well. He doesn’t force the ball into coverage and takes what the defense gives him.

Hall has a calm and composed demeanor in the pocket, even under pressure. He does not get rattled easily and maintains his focus on the field.

Negatives

Hall has had some injury issues in his college career, which is a concern at the next level. He missed some time in 2020 with a concussion and has had some other minor injuries as well. He needs to prove that he can stay healthy over the course of a full season. Hall can sometimes struggle with his pocket awareness. He can be slow to feel pressure and doesn’t always move well within the pocket. He needs to improve his footwork and feel for the pocket to avoid taking unnecessary sacks.

There are also some issues with ball security in the past, specifically with fumbles. He needs to work on protecting the ball better when running or when under pressure.

While Hall has good arm strength, his accuracy can be inconsistent at times. He can miss high or low on some throws and needs to work on his consistency in this area.

Grade – B

Jaren Hall is an athletic quarterback with good arm talent and decision-making ability. His toughness and leadership skills make him a valuable asset to any team. However, his durability and accuracy are concerns, and he needs to improve his decision-making under pressure and pocket awareness. With some development, Hall has the potential to become a solid backup quarterback at the next level.
